In many communities, there are reminders of the thinkers, writers, and leaders who helped shape the path forward. Recently, I stood in front of a framed poster that read, “You know how the saying goes… Great minds.” The images captured powerful thinkers and activists—individuals known for their ideas, courage, and commitment to social impact. As I looked at it, I was reminded that the progress we experience today did not appear overnight. It was built through the vision and sacrifice of those who came before. These are the individuals who asked difficult questions, challenged injustice, and imagined better futures for their communities. They understood that knowledge was not meant to stay on paper—it was meant to transform lives.
Their work laid the foundation for many of the opportunities that exist today. They fought for access to education, economic opportunity, and the right for communities to have a voice in shaping their own futures. Because of their courage, doors that were once closed have slowly begun to open. Yet the work they started is far from finished.
When I think about the mission of my nonprofit, I often reflect on the phrase “standing on the shoulders of giants.” It reminds me that our work is part of a much larger story. The scholars and leaders before us built the intellectual and moral framework that continues to guide community progress today. Their ideas remind us that real change requires both thought and action.
At the A&G Foundation, we take these values seriously. Our mission is rooted in access and growth—two principles that echo the work of those earlier thinkers and advocates. Access means ensuring that opportunities in education, entrepreneurship, and community development are available to people who have historically been left out. Growth means empowering individuals with the knowledge, resources, and networks needed to move forward.
Our organization believes that communities thrive when people are encouraged to think critically, lead boldly, and serve others. In many ways, this philosophy mirrors the legacy of the scholars and activists who inspired movements for justice and progress. They believed in the power of ideas to spark transformation, and we carry that belief into our programs and partnerships.
Their legacy reminds us that leadership is not simply about recognition—it is about responsibility. It is about using knowledge and influence to serve others and to build stronger communities.
As I looked at that poster, I felt both gratitude and responsibility. Gratitude for the thinkers and leaders who paved the way, and responsibility to continue the work they began. The ideas they introduced continue to echo through classrooms, community centers, and nonprofit organizations around the world.
Today, through the work of the A&G Foundation, we strive to honor that legacy. We believe that when people are given access to opportunity and the tools to grow, they become the next generation of great minds—leaders who will continue shaping communities long after we are gone.
